Storm Gloria: Bad weather continues to devastate Spain

The Storm named Gloria occurred in Spain by causing extreme losses to the local community.

The 100kmph mighty hit of the wind took over the coast of the Mediterranean where the Balearic Islands are located. The damage due to the unpredictable disaster has been rising with many fatalities resulting in heavy snowfall and flooding.

Because of the unexpected incident, The Alicante Airport is shut, and it jeopardized the operations of the flights in the direction towards London, Bristol, Newcastle, and other major destinations.

A 44 years old man had been reported dead hit by a car during the weather conditions due to lost control of the driver. Another incident reported as a man lost his wife in a village away about 130km from Madrid, she died hit by a tile. And also, during the morning, another 55 years old homeless woman found dead at a public park in the city of Gandia, Valencia, and her death caused by Hypothermia while she was sleeping. According to the local officials, she was offered aid from the shelter during the snowfall several times, but she had been rejected repeatedly, regardless, her husband was the first person to witness her death.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) accordingly stated, the weather condition will continue to be intense on Wednesday and it supposed to be moving towards the North-West of Spain tomorrow.

The alerts have been issued through six provinces due to the storm which has been affecting Spain since the weekend.

The snowfalls of the Storm Gloria historic among Teruel, Valencia, and Castellon according to the local media. Nine provinces of Teruel, Albacete, Murcia, Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Valencia, Alicante, and Castellón were given red warnings.

BBC Meteorologist Darren Bett forecast the weather conditions will be worst as in “heavy rains and strong winds” but the Storm Gloria will be reduced rapidly in the coming days with a minor threat of rain. 

Travelling is extremely difficult by using public roads at the moment. Some buses and trucks have been terminated temporarily by the government officials while A9 motorway of France to Spain has also been partially closed.
