New travel restrictions came into place after the Omicron variant was found in South Africa. In order to control this variant, 11 nations in and around southern Africa has been added to the red list countries by the UK government.
Travellers from red list countries will have to spend £2,285 to quarantine in a hotel for 11 nights.
In order to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant, international travelers should present a negative Covid19 PCR test taken before their departure.

- Eswatini
- Lesotho
- Malawi
- Mozambique
- Namibia
- Nigeria
- South Africa
- Zambia
- Zimbabwe
Present red list rules –
The Daily Express reports – passengers arriving from “high risk” countries will undergo various amounts of COVID-19 testing protocols.
British or Irish nationals or legal residents of the UK can enter the country from a red list nation.
In the last ten days, if you have been staying in a rest-listed country, you are subject to this rule.
A warning from the government to avoid travelling to countries or territories on the red list has been released.
For everyone travelling from red list countries, you should take a COVID-19 test in the three days before departure.
Passengers arriving from red list countries must book a hotel quarantine package, which will include the cost of two COVID-19 tests during the stay. Tests must be taken on days two and eight of the hotel stay.
Hotel quarantine rules to follow –
- Hotel quarantine rules should be followed even if you are fully vaccinated as per the government.
- Government-mandated hotel stay will cost you £2,285, for ten days (11 nights).
- An additional adult or child over the age of 11 will cost £1,430. However, an additional child ages 5 to 11 will cost £325. Children under the age of 5 are free.
COVID-19 PCR test requirements –
- A COVID-19 test in the three days before travelling to England is a must for children aged 11 to 17.
- Children aged between 5 and 17 must take two COVID-19 tests on their arrival to England as a part of their managed quarantine.
- A COVID-19 test is not required for Children under five during their stay.
The room rates are currently “under review” by the government. There will be a penalty of up to £10,000 for anyone breaking the quarantine rules.
