New research reveals: flying on Christmas day can save up to 80%
  • ABTA says 7MN holidaymakers have taken flights on Christmas day last year
  • Air travellers can save up to 80% by jetting off during peak days
  • Most of the Brits spend festive seasons in overseas

December is a busy time for holidaymakers who jet off with festive vibes to celebrate Christmas or to reunite with loved ones after a long break. Though December holidays often come with a hefty price tag as most of the airlines increase airfares during this season due to high demands of air travel.

According to ABTA’s latest figures, approximately seven million travellers have been jetted off for holidays during the season of Christmas and New Year last year.

An online delivery platform recently did a research and revealed that Christmas Day is the ultimate day for budget-savvy travellers to bag a bargain and make impressive savings. Where people can save up to 80% on flights for certain destinations.

When it comes to travelling in December, flying off-peak days and during off-hours will be the best way to save money. They also mentioned the day after Christmas is one of the most expensive days of the year to fly.

Proving the statement, they have emphasised that flight costs on 25th December last year are on average 32.5 % which is lower compared to the flights taken before the big day.

The research was done by examining the prices of a single, direct one-way ticket, classes, and checked bags including taxes through a survey of 100 direct short and long-haul routes from Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted airports.

The new research also highlights a significant change in certain destinations with a price drop showing 50% on flights. For travellers who are looking for the best savings on airfares could be made on flights to Germany, with the price of flights to Cologne, Stuttgart and Dusseldorf shows an impressive reduction from 80% to 71% and 70% respectively.

Surprisingly, short-haul flights to the Finnish capital of Helsinki, 75% cheaper, and Coruña in Spain, with savings of 71%.

According to the research, flights from London to Lisbon, Madrid, Oslo, Rio de Janeiro, Rome and Warsaw shows a half price on Christmas Day compared to other routes.

Long haul flights like direct flights to Vietnam, holidaymakers could bag up to £,1000 in savings when travelling to the city of Ho Chi Minh and Britons who wish to take a flight to Australia can save a whopping £600 when travelling to Perth in Australia.

A spokesperson says: “Though it’s still traditional to have all the family round on Christmas Day, more Brits than in previous generations will spend the festive season celebrating in major cities overseas, on ski slopes or at warmer destinations further afield.

“For those travelling at one of the busiest times of the year, picking the right day for family finances and stress levels can be a challenge.

“Shopping around will normally get you a better price on your flight and having the flexibility to depart on Christmas day itself so your festive getaway could make a huge difference to your personal finances at one of the busiest times of the year.

“Our research shows that you can expect to save around a third when compared to leaving just a couple of days earlier, but prices can go up and down all the time so act quick if you spot a bargain.”

However, for those heading from Abuja, Cape Town, Marseille, Mexico City and Nairobi there are no changes in the prices on Santa’s big day. You will find flights from London to Kiev, Marrakech, Nice, Paris and Tenerife cost more compared to other dates during the Christmas period, based on prices between 20th-31st December.
