Maldives is one of the favourite island getaways in the world. Renowned as a honeymoon destination and the famous pristine beaches are ideal for great vacations.

However, the biggest dilemma facing Maldives at present is the rising ocean levels leading to an inevitable expectation of being underwater one day. More than 80 percent of the islands are not more than 3 or 5 feet above water levels. It is the lowest country in the world with over 1000 islands in the archipelago. Several actions were implemented such as building retaining walls around every island, entire country being carbon neutral and creating awareness and education in environment science. Finally, the government has decided to build mini floating islands as a novel strategy for Maldives.

The government of Maldives has signed an agreement with Dutch Dockland for a floating island. The floating island project is a star shaped tiered island featuring luxury golf courses, beaches and an eco-friendly convention centre. The Dutch Dockland International is an architectural firm that has joined hands with the government to build the world’s largest artificial floating islands.

The floating islands are a speedboat ride away from the capital of Maldives, Male. The entire island will be carbon neutral.

The government further states and ensures that the latest project of floating island will not affect the marine life thus preserve it. One of the best examples is using cables and telescopic mooring piles to anchor the islands to the seabed creating less damage to the seabed.

Discussions are finalised and the project will be started by later 2012 and aims to launch in 2015.
