Frequently asked questions

WHAT IS THE PERFECT ANNUAL TIME TO VISIT SRI LANKA?

Anytime is a fabulous time to visit Sri Lanka! It has two monsoons that happen in separate halves of the island. So if you crave to relish the western and southern beach resorts when the warmth is most salutary, travel between December and April.

WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION IS PRESENT?

Anything is available in Sri Lanka! 5* hotels, resorts, boutique hotels, villas, and guest houses can be found, mainly in the western and southern coasts, and Kandy including the hill country.

IS SRI LANKA A KID-FRIENDLY DESTINATION?

Sri Lanka is a very kid-friendly country. People make a special effort to entertain children: when it comes to tourists, the effort increases. Hotels and resorts have family rooms, and children are well-catered in restaurants. Baby food and nappies are available in stores. If you need your children to play safely while you eat or shop in Colombo, there are accessible and well-maintained play areas.

IS IT LIKELY TO SEE TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS?

The most important is in May, Vesak Poya – a festival that marks Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. The illuminated pandals hung with pictures representing events in the Buddha’s life, are worth seeing. The most renowned traditional festival is the Kandy Esala Perahera, held in Kandy over 10 days in late July to early August. A magical show of drummers, dancer’s whip-crackers, acrobats and robed elephants. A decorated tusker carries the basis for the celebration, the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.

IS AYURVEDIC TREATMENT POSSIBLE?

Yes. Ayurveda is practised widely than Western medicine. Many hotels offer Ayurvedic treatment for guests with qualified therapists to guide you on how to better your health, including baths and massages.

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY IN SRI LANKA?

It is simple to remain healthy in Sri Lanka. Minor health problems can be prescribed by doctors with practices in the resorts and elsewhere in the country. If you have a serious problem, Colombo brags well-equipped private hospitals giving the latest medical and surgical procedures.

WHAT CLOTHES SHOULD I WEAR?

In the low country, loose skirts or trousers and tops, and a long-sleeved blouse for visiting temples, are ideal for women. Men should wear trousers or shorts and a T-shirt, or the local sarong. Take a sunhat and sandals, slippers or shoes that are easy to slip on and off. For hill country trips, pack a fluffy sweater.

WHAT KIND OF FOOD IS FEASIBLE?

Rice is consumed with curries that vary from less spiced to near-dynamite. There are also hoppers, string hoppers and pittu (flour and coconut mixture). Lamprais- rice baked in plantain leaves – is a legacy of the Dutch. Fresh crabs, prawns, fish, and squid are easily obtainable. Desserts include buffalo curd coated with palm-honey and the caramel-like Wattalapam.

Sri Lanka is a perfect destination for water-skiing, jet-skiing, surfing, wind-surfing, snorkelling sailing, scuba diving, speed-boating, banana-boating, kayaking, canoeing, and adrenaline-pumping white-water rafting. There’s rock-climbing, caving, mountain biking and paragliding for the bold.
