The Cannes Festival, until 2002 was known as the International Film Festival and known in English as the Cannes Film Festival, it’s a yearly film festival which takes place in Cannes, France, it screens current movies of all categories, plus documentaries from all over the world.
Started during 1946, the invitation-only festival is had yearly (generally during May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. It is one of the “Big Three” beside the Venice Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival.
The Cannes Film Festival has its roots in 1932 when Jean Zay, the French Minister of National Education, on the suggestion of historian Philippe Erlanger and with the backing of the British and Americans, created a global cinematographic festival.
The first festival was planned for 1939, Cannes was chosen as the site for it, but the finance and planning were too slow and lastly, the start of World War II put an end to this idea.
On 20 September 1946, twenty-one nations showed their movies at the First Cannes International Film Festival, which was held at the earlier Casino of Cannes.
Regarded as one of the most anticipated film festivals in the world of worldwide cinema, this year’s 72nd yearly Cannes Film Festival is set to take place from 14th until the 25th of May 2019. Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu will perform as the jury president.
